Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first appearance was in the television screen in the role of Jackie Harris, a character that was played by her mother on her role on the ABC show Roseanne. But her parents would not allow her to act until she turned an adult due to the negative effects that stress could have on their daughter. Perry was shy during high school and didn't act. The actress began her acting career in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends when she moved from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she got small roles on shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness led Perry her back home California, where theater jobs were available. Perry was a part of Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. The show featured their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 at The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a lead role in nine episodes of ABC's show The Family. Her father played her character in the ABC Drama Scandal. The same year, she played a young character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a youthful version. Despite having a family connection to the character she received the role via an audition.
